The Veronicas’ Jessica Origliasso has opened up about being outed by the media at the start of her career.

Since the early 2000s, the Australian pop duo – which consists of identical twins Lisa and Jessica Origliasso – have made their mark in the industry with their unforgettable hit singles and albums.

While the pair has reached superstardom, they have also been subjected to intense scrutiny from the tabloids regarding their sexuality.

In a recent interview with Stellar Magazine, The Veronicas reflected on the constant speculation they faced – which resulted in Jessica being outed.

“I was out back then by default – outed by tabloids,” Jessica told the publication.

During the height of the rumours, the singer was rumoured to be dating Batwoman star Ruby Rose after the press spotted them kissing.

“My statement [then] was that I didn’t need to make a statement. ‘I’m just going to be me, and if you all want to call me a fake lesbian,’ – which is what they called me at the time – ‘I don’t really care,” she explained.

Towards the end of the interview, Jessica admitted that it was “weird” to have her sexuality be a topic of conversation within the media.

“It was weird to have it written about so publicly because you don’t really see that anymore. I was 20,” she explained.

“I didn’t want to give them an answer because I didn’t know what the answer was at the time. Labels were loaded back then. But all our fans knew I was queer; I wrote about it in so many songs.”

While Jessica faced media scrutiny for her sexuality early in her career, the beloved talent has gone on to lead a successful life as an openly queer music artist.

Back in September, Jessica announced that she was engaged to her long-term girlfriend Alex Smith.

“WIFED (still crying a week later) I’ve waited my whole life for you and I can’t wait to marry you Alexandra!!! @poolsideplayboy,” she wrote on Instagram.

“Thank you to everyone for the love and messages the past week. I’m sorry if we haven’t got back yet, I promise we will.”

In addition to her relationship feats, Jessica and her sister are also set to perform at Sydney WorldPride’s Mardi Gras parade.
