Move over Melissa Joan Hart…
American actress Kiernan Shipka has been cast in the iconic role of Sabrina Spellman for Netflix’s gritty, Buffy-esque reboot, which is expected to premiere later this year/early 2019.
The 18-year-old actress has garnered critical praise in the past for her role as Sally Draper on Mad Men, and B.D. Hyman on Feud: Bette and Joan.
Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said: “We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work, that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list.
“This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”
Jon Goldwater – Archie Comics boss – added: “I am thrilled that Kiernan is playing Sabrina and have no doubt that she will embody the strength, courage and boldness that has made the character a fan favourite.”

Titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, this new take on everyone’s favourite Archie Comics witch will include familiar characters, but in a totally new setting. Instead of Boston, Massachusetts, Sabrina will be set in Greendale.
The show follows fellow Archie Comics adaptation Riverdale to our TV sets, so we’re inclined to suspect the two will be linked in some way. Especially because Greendale is the town next to Riverdale…
Not much else is known about the reboot, but we’re hoping Hilda, Zelda, Harvey and Salem (and Libby Chessler) will return.
The most famous TV adaptation of the character – Sabrina the Teenage Witch – originally aired between 1996 to 2003 with Melissa Joan Hart in the titular role.
