Newcomer pop star Fred Roberts has dropped a brand-new single.
The 20-year-old British artist is making sense of his identity in today’s fast-paced society.
Speaking on his new music, Roberts shares: “Runaway is a song about overcoming resentment towards someone that used to be a big part of my life. It’s a celebration of the freedom that arrives after you overcome a difficult time and a person who probably wasn’t the best for you. Someone who held the power to ruin your happiness with a few words or actions.
“The song details the last time I saw him – in a pub with friends, unexpectedly and the fear that comes along with that. But ultimately the realisation that I am no longer filled with upset and anger but with forgiveness. I am beyond excited to share it with the world and I really hope it connects.”
Roberts teamed up with writer Andrew Wells (Phoebe Bridgers, Halsey) and Anthony Rossomando (Lady Gaga, Ellie Goulding) for his preppy pop hit. The rousing guitar-rock track, which feels antithetical to the sound of most queer loves songs, chronicles Fred’s encounter with a boy he once knew.
In a press release, the singer opened up about his inspiration and the purpose behind his sound: “I write songs with the specific intent of helping someone who is going through the same experience. I want to be part of something bigger than me.”
