Eternals star Angelina Jolie is set to return for another Maleficent film.
Since bursting on the scene in the mid-90s, the beloved talent has been a prominent fixture in Hollywood due to her showstopping talent, stacked filmography, and queer icon status.
While the Oscar winner has cultivated a decades-long career and continues to wow audiences with her superb acting talent, Jolie recently announced that she would be leaving Hollywood and relocating to Cambodia.
“It’s part of what happened after my divorce. I lost the ability to live and travel as freely. I will move when I can. I grew up in quite a shallow place,” she revealed in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal.
“Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity.”
Fortunately, the Salt star’s upcoming movie won’t be impacting her acting endeavours.
According to the aforementioned publication, Jolie has signed on to an array of projects over the next few years, including a third Maleficent film.
While the Tomb Raider actor refrained from releasing further information about the upcoming project, fans were quick to flock to X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their excitement.
One fan wrote: Sometimes a movie isn’t just a movie; it’s an immersion into a world of cinematic brilliance. Maleficent is that and more—an absolute masterpiece.
Another user posted: “I hope this is true because Maleficent is my favorite character of all time.”
A third fan added: “MOTHER THIS IS EVERYTHING.”
The recent news comes fours years after the second Maleficent film, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, was released in cinemas.
Set several years after the events of the first film, the sequel follows the titular character and Princess Aurora (Elle Fanning) as they “begin to question the complex family ties that bind them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies and dark new forces at play.”
Alongside Jolie and Fanning, the film starred Sam Riley as Maleficent’s crow companion Diaval, Michelle Pfeiffer as the villainous Queen Ingrith, Harris Dickinson as Prince Phillip, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Conall, Imelda Staunton as red fairy Knotgrass, Juno Temple as green fairy Thistlewit, and Lesley Manville as blue fairy Flittle.
In 2020, Jolie revealed to PEOPLE that it was difficult stepping back into the role of Maleficent due to her divorce from Brad Pitt.
“It was a tough time. I’d been coming off a few years of difficulty, and I was not feeling very strong. In fact, I was feeling pretty broken. It took me a moment to feel the strength of [Maleficent] again,” she said.
