The film is scheduled to be released next month after multiple delays.
Maisie Williams has praised the same-sex relationship between Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane (Williams) and Danielle Moonstar / Mirage (Blu Hunt) in The New Mutants, which is set to hit cinema screens next month. The star emphasised how “important” it was for same-sex relationships to be featured in films.
Speaking on the New Mutants panel at Comic-Con@Home, Maisie said: “It was really wonderful to be able to see a relationship look like this.
“In the typically quite masculine world of superheroes, it was just lovely to see these two fragile women who just protect one another and bring light out in each other, but I’m glad that the fans are so excited for it because I think it’s really important to see relationships like this.
“I think at the heart of it is just this really lovely love story. It just brings it back to reality, I think.”
Blu also revealed that she has been nervous about kissing Maisie during screen-tests, saying: “You can’t imagine how nervous I am. Like, oh, I have to go kiss Maisie Williams? It was very nerve-racking.”
The film’s director, Josh Boone, had previously said that a “beautiful love story” would be at the heart of the film, which he called “sort of the spine and focus of some of the character-driven stuff in the film.”
And in a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly, Maisie had explained that her and Blu’s characters were linked because of their “telepathic connection.”
“And so we just wanted to extend that in the film and put that within reality,” she explained. “If they really could understand each other on that level, then you’d probably end up falling in love with that person.”
However, Maisie did say that their romance is “not something that is spoken about too much in the film.” But that’s why the Game of Thrones star loved it, because it didn’t feel like a “gimmick”.
“It’s not really a story about these two characters understanding their sexuality,” she continued. “It’s not centered around that and they don’t really necessarily label it. No one else does either and no one really questions it.”
The New Mutants is scheduled to be released on 28 August 2020.
