Wednesday will reportedly ‘ditch’ love interests for the titular character.
Last year, the supernatural comedy-horror series made history as the second most-watched English-language series ever on Netflix and received two Golden Globe nominations, including Best Actress for lead star Jenna Ortega.
After the series was (unsurprisingly) renewed for a sophomore season, Ortega expressed her dissatisfaction over her character’s love triangle with coffee shop barista Tyler (Hunter Doohan) and Nevermore Academy student Xavier (Percy Hynes White).
“I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down more on a set in a way that I had to on Wednesday,” she said on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.
“Everything that Wednesday does, everything I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all. Her being in a love triangle? It made no sense.”
Ortega’s concerns over her character have seemingly been heard, as she’s confirmed that Wednesday will not become romantically entangled in season two.
In a conversation with Elle Fanning for Variety, she revealed: “It’s still coming together, but we’ve decided we want to lean into the horror more. We’re ditching any romantic love interest, which is really great. We’re going to get bolder, more dark.”
The team behind Wednesday ‘graciously’ allowed Ortega to put her “producer hat on”: “This is my first time. It was a natural progression. With a character like Wednesday, who is so beloved, I didn’t want to get her wrong.
“So I tried to have as many conversations as possible with the writers. We’d decide what works and what doesn’t. In preparation for a second season, we wanted to make sure that we could start the conversations earlier.
“I’m just so curious: I want to see the outfits, new characters, scripts.”
Sadly, Ortega’s revelation confirms that we will not see ‘Wenclair’ come to fruition (yet).
Since season one dropped, fans have passionately shipped a romantic relationship between Wednesday and her best friend Enid (Emma Meyers). Ortega even co-signed, saying they “would have been a thing” in a “perfect world”.
As of writing, the release date and cast for Wednesday season two are yet to be announced.
The only sure-fire returnees are Ortega, Myers and Doohan.
With Tyler’s secret status as a Hyde out of the bag, Doohan told ET that he’s “excited” for season two to “explore him, fighting between the monster and the real version of him”.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Luis Guzmán also confirmed there are plans for him to reprise his role as Wednesday’s father Gomez Addams and for him to “dance” and “have a sword fight”.
Additional cast members we expect to return include Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley, Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, Jamie McShane as Sheriff Galpin, Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay, Georgia Farmer as Ajax Petropolus, Naomi J. Ogawa as Yoko Tanaka, Moosa Mostafa as Eugene Ottinger and George Burcea as Lurch.
