“I don’t really fit into what has been shown on Drag Race before.”
Gothy Kendoll says there’s never been a queen like her on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
In our exclusive interview with the the self-described “chav”, Gothy boldly stated that she doesn’t “really fit into what has been show on Drag Race before”, adding: “I break the mould and I don’t fit into the standard of what British drag is.”
Impersonating a woman isn’t Gothy’s sole priority. The 22-year-old acknowledged the UK’s strong history of “pantomime” drag, but said she aims to push contemporary ideas of beauty and glamour and elevate the art-form to the next level.
“I want to show that my drag is valid, and I want people to be inspired by what I do,” she told us. “There’s so much more to British drag than people realise and I feel like I’m showing that side.”
As well as providing fans with something they’ve never seen before, Gothy said we can expect her to serve “nice hair, nice wigs – wait no, that’s the same thing” as well as “gobbiness” and “a bit of an attitude” (we wouldn’t expect anything less).
Of the difference between Drag Race UK and its US counterpart, she teased: “It can’t be compared, Americans just love to talk and we just love to take the piss. Everyone is going to be so shocked about what’s happened. You’re going to love it.”
Drag Race UK is set to premiere 3 October on BBC Three and iPlayer. Gothy will be joined by Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea, Cheryl Hole, Chrystal, Divina De Campo, Scaredy Kat, Sum Ting Wong, Vinegar Strokes and The Vivienne.
RuPaul will return as host and main judge alongside best squirrel friend Michelle Visage, as well as newcomers Alan Carr and Graham Norton, who will rotate every episode like Ross Matthews and Carsson Kressley on the American original.
It will feature a star-studded line-up of celebrity guests such as Lorraine Kelly, Stacey Dooley, Cheryl, Maisie Williams, Geri Halliwell, Andrew Garfield, Michaela Coel, Jade Thirwall, Twiggy, MNEK, Curtis Pritchard and AJ Pritchard.
