Emmy winner Billy Porter has opened up about his divorce in a new interview.
Back in July, a rep for the Pose star announced that he and his husband of six years Adam Smith, were calling it quits.
“I can confirm that Billy Porter and his husband Adam Smith have made the sad decision to end their marriage after six years,” the rep told People.
“The decision was an amicable and mutual one and was made after much consideration. They continue to love and support each other as they embark on this next chapter. There will be no further comment from either parties and it would be appreciated if their privacy be respected.”
Since announcing their split, Porter has remained relatively silent on the matter – until now.
In a recent interview with The Evening Standard, the Golden Globe nominee gave further insight into how he’s been navigating his very public break-up.
“The whole world knows I’m getting a divorce! Y’all want to talk about my divorce and Ricky Martin’s at the same time?” he joked.
At the time of his interview, the Cinderella star was visiting London, the same place where he proposed to Smith in 2016.
“It’s bittersweet. But relationships are hard. I will always love him. We made it as far as we could,” he explained.
“But we learn, we grow, and we live. And I’m looking forward to the next… adventure,” he exclaimed.
“She’s back on the market! Looking for an and English huzzzband! And you have to spell it just like that! Huszzzband!”
Porter and Smith first crossed paths while attending a dinner party in 2009. After nearly a year of dating the two broke it off.
However five years later, the two rekindled their romance, resulting in their marriage on 14 January 2017.
“We both grew up in households where who we are is labeled an ‘abomination.'” The thought of marriage, there was no context for it – there was no dreaming about it because there was no context to dream,” Porter told People shortly after his union to Smith.
“So to see that come around, to see that tide turned, it still takes my breath away; I’m still trying to find the words to describe it.”
