Fall has arrived in New York City, bringing with it a burst of ‘back to school’ energy that sweeps through the streets. The mugginess has finally cleared, revealing a vibrant autumnal cityscape where the latest fashion trends are paraded along the sidewalks. GT’s latest adventure takes us to the heart of this dynamic urban experience, where we’re spending a gay late-summer weekend with friends.
Our home base for this trip is The New York EDITION, an earlier yet still iconic chapter in Ian Schrager’s acclaimed hotel brand, in collaboration with Marriott International. From the moment we arrive, the check-in process is a breeze—friendly, swift, and efficient. The New York EDITION, with its distinctive NYC small footprint, stands as a sleek, sky-high clock tower offering sweeping views over midtown Manhattan. Its compact design translates into an invitingly intimate lobby and a cozy lobby bar, creating a serene retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle.
The hotel attracts a diverse crowd, including couples, friends, and younger travelers. You might even catch a glimpse of some well-known LGBTQ+ famous faces, perhaps relaxing with a cocktail downstairs or waiting for an elevator.
LGBTQ+ Creds
EDITION hotels are renowned for embracing diversity, and The New York EDITION is no exception. The staff exuded warmth and approachability, making our check-in experience feel personal rather than transactional. Our host shared some of her favorite local LGBTQ+ hotspots, enhancing our stay with insider tips.
After check-in, take one of the elevators up the clocktower. The 273 guest rooms here are spacious by New York City standards, providing ample room for relaxation and socializing. Perfect for unwinding after a day exploring the city, we enjoyed ordering bespoke EDITION cocktails to our room, which arrived promptly (and went down quite easily!)
Comfort
The aesthetic of EDITION rooms is both minimalist and elegant. Featuring oak wooden floorboards, substantial desks ideal for work, and luxurious bed sheets that invite you to linger, every detail is thoughtfully curated. The expansive King bed, draped in Egyptian cotton sheets, offers unparalleled comfort. The bathrooms, though simple, exude a refined elegance, and the lighting throughout the room creates a soft, soothing ambience that contrasts beautifully with the city’s vibrant energy.
Location
The New York EDITION is ideally situated in Madison Square Park. This leafy park is perfect for a morning stroll, accompanied by a coffee and bagel from one of the nearby cafes. The hotel’s location offers convenience and proximity to various amenities while steering clear of the frenetic pace of tourist hotspots like Times Square.
LGBTQ+ Happenings
For an afternoon pre-game, head to Julius’, a historic West Village bar where the after-work crowd is a lively mix of LGBTQ+ patrons. Adorned with historic images and an inviting atmosphere, Julius’ is a great spot to soak in the local vibe.
For a more refined dining experience, make a reservation at The Clocktower, the atmospheric restaurant located within the hotel. Known for its exceptional brasserie-style fare, it’s an ideal setting for a mid-week catch-up with friends. Diners relax in one of three intimate dining rooms, with the restaurant’s dark-wooden ambience and high-quality menu creating an elevated atmosphere.
On our visit, GAY TIMES tried the famed deserts, finished at the table. Make sure you leave room!
Our Final Thoughts
The New York EDITION stands out as the perfect choice for young LGBTQ+ professionals who work hard and play harder, queer couples seeking a chic urban retreat, and groups of friends looking to enjoy a premium memorable getaway in the heart of Manhattan.
It’s authentic New York with a modern edge; personalised and individualised, whilst encouraging guests to mingle and make new friends. Whatever you’re in town for, you can’t go wrong at The New York EDITION.
