Maisie Williams has revealed that she portrayed her character in Practical Magic 2 as a “sapphic icon”.
The British actress stars in the long-awaited sequel to the 1998 classic as Antonia Owens, the daughter of Sally (Sandra Bullock), niece of Gillian (Nicole Kidman) and sister of Kylie (Joey King).
In The Book of Magic, the novel on which Practical Magic 2 is based, Antonia is a lesbian medical student who falls in love with a woman named Ariel. Her sexuality is significant to the story, as it means she escapes the centuries-old Owens family curse – a spell that dooms the men who fall in love with the Owens women.
Antonia is also pregnant in the novel, which prevents her from joining her mother and aunt as they set out to track down Kylie after she flees to Thornfield. Neither of these elements of Antonia’s story, her pregnancy or her relationship with Ariel, feature in the film.
