Neighbours has aired its first positive gay proposal scene.
Australia’s longest running drama series has boasted several same-sex couples in the past, but is yet to feature a gay wedding.
However, it looks like it’s set to change after Friday’s episode (18 May), which saw Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson) propose to David Tanaka (Takaya Honda) during their romantic beach break.
Aaron’s plan to propose was slightly upstaged when it turned out that David was planning on proposing, too. The couple’s moment turned into a double proposal… and of course they both said yes!
“When I used to think of my future I could imagine so many different versions, but now I can only imagine one,” said Aaron. “And that’s with you.”
David, who then dropped to one knee, replied: “Aaron, you make me smile every day and I’m a strong person being with you, and I want to spend the rest of my life learning and growing and exploring with you.”

Speaking to Press Association about the potential for a same-sex wedding on Neighbours, Wilson said: “The general consensus from everyone in my groups is that Australia is so far behind and it was almost embarrassing.
“So the fact that it happened and Aaron and David are at that stage in their relationship where they are going to get married, we may be the first gay couple to get married on Australian television since it’s become legal.”
Wilson continued: “I’ve been trying to get this wedding to happen for some time now … I feel like I’ve got a lot of ownership over this, so I want it to be perfect. I’m starting to feel like a bit of a groomzilla.
“I hope they make it big, I want it colourful, I want the old cast to come back for it, I don’t know if that’s possible [but] I want it to be the wedding of the year.”
