Netflix has revealed the first official stills from the upcoming second season of Heartstopper.
The photos show Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor), as well as Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell), all coupled up on a school trip to Paris. Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney) are also in love mode at the cinema, while additional solo shots consist of Charlie, Nick and Isaac (Tobie Donovan).
The highly-anticipated second season premieres 3 August on Netflix.
The synopsis is as follows: “Nick and Charlie navigate their new relationship; Tara and Darcy face unforeseen challenges and Tao and Elle work out if they can ever be more than just friends. With exams on the horizon, a school trip to Paris and a prom to plan, the gang has a lot to juggle as they journey through the next stages of life, love and friendship.”
In an interview with Radio Times, Alice Oseman – the creator of the series (and the beloved webcomic slash graphic novel of the same name) – teased “more tension and drama” in the new batch of episodes “because we have slowed down the story”.
“Everything happens so fast in the graphic novels, but in the show, we want to lengthen the storylines, therefore more obstacles have to cross our characters’ paths,” they revealed.
“This season, Nick wants to come out to the world, but faced with his nasty brother, his mostly absent father, and his laddy mates, soon finds that it’s not as easy as he initially thought.”
Oseman continued to explain that, due to Charlie’s endless support of Nick, Charlie will ‘neglect’ his mental health. However, they added: “But no matter the challenges ahead for the Heartstopper gang, we all know that they’ll be okay in the end!”
Heartstopper’s sophomore season also sees the return of Jenny Walser as Tori Spring, Sebastian Croft as Ben Hope, Cormac Hyde-Corrin as Harry Greene, Rhea Norwood as Imogen Heaney, Fisayo Akinade as Mr Ajayi, Chetna Pandya as Coach Singh, Stephen Fry as the voice of Headmaster Barnes and Olivia Colman as Sarah Nelson.
New cast members include Bel Priestly as Naomi, Ash Self as Felix, Thibault de Montalembert as Nick’s father Stephane, Jack Barton as Nick’s older brother David, Leila Khan as Sahar Zahid, Nima Taleghani as Mr Farouk and Bradley Riches – who previously played a student in season one – as James McEwan.
