“That’s a British drag queen! They are potty-mouths!”
Alan Carr was told by Drag Race UK producers to ask the contestants to be less ‘potty-mouthed’.
In an interview with Huffington Post, the British comedian – who will serve as a judge on the highly-anticipated spin-off – said he was surprised the show would air on the BBC, joking that it should be on after BabeStation.
“But good for the BBC for going with it! I feel the viewers should have a little helping of charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent. Why not? What’s wrong with that?” he said, before explaining how the producers interfered…
“[The queens] are a bit potty-mouthed though! That’s another thing… the producers asked me to get them to say something that wasn’t too rude when I was in the workroom with them… but that’s a British drag queen! They are potty-mouths!
“Everyone thinks they are airy-fairies, clutching their handbags, but they’re rough as arseholes and they swear like navvies. That’s a very big misconception. They have to be. It’s dog-eat-dog on the gay scene.”
Drag Race UK premieres 3 October on BBC Three and iPlayer.
RuPaul will return as host and main judge alongside best squirrel friend Michelle Visage, as well as newcomers Alan and Graham Norton, who will rotate every episode like Ross Matthews and Carsson Kressley on the American original.
The queens competing for the title of the UK’s First Drag Superstar are as follows: Baga Chipz, Blu Hydrangea, Cheryl Hole, Crystal, Divina De Campo, Gothy Kendoll, Scaredy Kat, Sum Ting Wong, Vinegar Strokes and The Vivienne.
It will feature a star-studded line-up of celebrity guests such as Lorraine Kelly, Stacey Dooley, Cheryl, Maisie Williams, Geri Halliwell, Andrew Garfield, Michaela Coel, Jade Thirwall, Twiggy, MNEK, Curtis Pritchard and AJ Pritchard.
Explaining what makes the new version different from the US original, Michelle told us: “The kids are all from the UK and the talent and the things that we do are very British, we’re not there to make it American, otherwise we’d do it in America.
“It’s very American to do the looks, but very British to put performance first, and I celebrate that, being an old school girl myself. I’m really excited for the world to see what they have to offer.
“I think it’s going to be huge and I’m telling you, this show is going to be on for years.”
