The Netherlands made history today as Rob Jetten was sworn in as the country’s youngest and first-ever openly gay prime minister.

The 38-year-old centrist, who has led Democrats 66 (D66) since 2023, secured victory in last October’s snap election.

The vote came to fruition after the far-right Freedom Party (PVV) withdrew from the ruling coalition, bringing an and to what had been the most right-leaning government the Netherlands had seen in decades. The administration lasted just 11 months in power.

Jetten’s win marked a defeat for PVV leader Geert Wilders, the anti-Islam populist who dominated the previous government. In order to form a new coalition, D66 has partnered with the centre-right Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) and the liberal People’s Party for Freedom (VVD).
