Across the grand scope of TV and film, the gay community, and the wider LGBTQIA+ community, has often been given the short end of the stick when it comes to on-screen representation. Too often, queer characters are relegated to supporting roles or forced to embody outdated stereotypes that fuel hate and pushback.
Thankfully, that’s begun to change. In recent years, LGBTQIA+ viewers have been treated to more dynamic films and TV shows with gay characters at the centre, many of them adapted from beloved books. From Heartstopper and Red, White and Royal Blue to Heated Rivalry and Call Me By Your Name, iconic stories that first captured readers worldwide have been given the live-action treatment.
With the rise of gay book adaptations, we’ve put forward five novels that would be perfect for TV and film, along with the actors we’d cast in the lead roles.
