Kiersey Clemons and Barbie Ferreira have been tapped to star in the new LGBTQ+ dramedy, The Young King.
The film, which is set to take place in the 90s, will follow aspiring drag king Jules (Clemons), who travels to Las Vegas to reconnect with her estranged dad, legendary gambler and part-time birthday clown Mick (Michael Shannon).
Alongside meeting with her father, Jules also sets her sights on making her drag debut at the largest drag king venue in the US. However, Mick is less than thrilled to see his daughter “presenting masculine, wearing suits” and chasing after no-nonsense dancer Ronnie (Ferreira) – who he also “frequents regularly.”
Larin Sullivan, who wrote the film’s script, is set to make his directorial debut with acclaimed songwriter Justin Tranter signing on as executive music producer.
Clemons will also be producing the movie alongside Corporate Witchcraft’s Kim Bailey and Isabel Marden.
“We are delighted to present Larin’s fresh twist on a classic Vegas story by shining a light on the drag king scene, which is rarely, if ever, seen explored on the big screen,” said Mister Smith Entertainment CEO David Garrett. “Led by our stellar cast, this is an incredibly emotional father-daughter story that will resonate with buyers and audiences.”
According to Deadline, the film is expected to begin production in 2023 and will be shot on location in Las Vegas.
Aside from their starring roles in The Young King, the two openly queer actors are set to have a busy few years.
Back in August, Ferreira joined Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming thriller House of Spoils – which also stars West Side Story actress Ariana DeBose.
Clemons is set to star in DC’s upcoming superhero film The Flash film as Iris West. She’ll also be appearing in Apple TV+’s new action series, Godzilla and The Titans.
