"I feel fucking furious and abandoned and betrayed!" says Kate, 33, from Lisboa. She's responding to my Instagram Stories where I've just asked my followers how they feel about the cancellations of sapphic reality TV.
I Kissed a Girl (2024-2026) is the latest sapphic show to be axed from a major network, following a trend that has seen other major reality TV shows involving the WLW and non-binary community meet a sudden end. We lost The Ultimatum: Queer Love in 2024, and I'm not sure we will ever recover from The Real L Word's cancellation in 2012.
But it isn't only sapphic reality TV getting the axe of late; scripted shows with major sapphic story lines are also dwindling year on year. Shows like Star Trek: Starfleet Academy on Paramount+, The Acolyte on Disney+, A League of Their Own on Amazon Prime and First Kill on Netflix never made it past season one.
