There is nothing contrived about Tracey. She joins our Zoom call from her bed. Not the one in the Tate Modern – she’s somewhere in Margate, hidden away from the sear of the sun. She tells me that it’s cooler by the sea, but it’s the hottest June on record and this does not make me feel any better about the state of our melting planet. I wonder if the artist sees the humour in the call’s setting – if she does, it’s not front of mind. Society would have us believe that artists are curators of the self, but Tracey Emin is straight up: “You can ask me anything, and I’ll answer you.”
