Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are fully embracing Practical Magic’s status as a queer cult classic, saying the film was “made” with the community in mind.

After 28 years (!), the Academy Award-winning icons have finally returned as beloved sister-witch duo Sally and Gillian Owens in the long – emphasis on ‘long’ – awaited sequel to the ’90s classic.

While the original fantasy rom-com drama (what genre wasn’t it?) was only a modest commercial success and received a lukewarm response from (boring) critics, it went on to cultivate a fiercely devoted following – especially amongst the gays. Its powerful female characters, occult storyline and unmistakable sapphic undertones helped cement its status as a queer cult classic.

Even the ostracisation Sally and Gillian face from their peers because of their witchcraft has long been interpreted as a metaphor for queer prejudice and discrimination, making the sisters’ story resonate all the more deeply with LGBTQIA+ audiences.
