The musical Cats made headlines for all the wrong reasons a few years back, with the star-studded film adaptation (starring Judi Dench, Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen and more) being much maligned by critics and cinema goers alike. If you were lucky enough to avoid the movie, and you’re not familiar with the show, you should be aware that Cats has absolutely no plot. Literally none. It’s based on TS Eliot’s 1939 collection of children’s poetry Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats and the musical comprises two hours of cats singing about being cats. That’s all there is to it.

If you’re looking for nuanced character development, unexpected plot twists and a narrative that pays off after you’ve invested in it, you’ve come to the wrong place. Having said that, we really enjoyed our evening with Cats at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. So what’s good about it?
