Miami is a cultural melting pot of what the United States does best. From the city’s diversity to the array of things to do, it truly does offer something for everyone and has one of the best LGBTQ+ scenes in the country. After attending Miami Beach Pride 2023, GAY TIMES wants to help you plan the trip of a lifetime so you can have an experience you’ll never forget.
When is the best time to visit?
Despite warm weather being a year-round luxury in Miami, that’s not to say you’ll have the same experience whenever you visit.
If you’re after a classic summer getaway, then of course the months of May-September are when you’ll want to go.
However, visiting outside of this timeframe can give you a more unforgettable trip with less of a tourist presence in the city – especially if you opt to head over in April when Miami Beach Pride takes place and there are an array of events to attend (many of which are free).
When is Miami Beach Pride and should I go?
Miami Beach Pride is the city’s annual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and sees thousands of people attend events and performances there every April.
It’s a Pride like no other, literally taking place on the beach in the gorgeous Florida sunshine. Those who took to the stage in 2023 included Todrick Hall, Shangela, Sandra Bernhard and Wrabel.
Community is at the core of Miami Beach Pride, which is run by volunteers from the area, platforms local performers at every opportunity and is as accessible for anyone wishing to attend.
Is there a Pride Parade?
Yes! Like most Pride celebrations, the Parade is one of its most important events and is a chance for the LGBTQ+ community to come together.
It also serves as a protest, with 2023’s seeing many attendees use placards, slogans and signs to demonstrate against the increasing amounts of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation advancing in Florida.
It usually lasts around two hours and takes place along Ocean Drive, with several viewing points available for people to watch along from.
Where does it all take place?
The vast majority of Miami Beach Pride takes place in South Beach, with other events taking place in various other locations in the area.
The main stage is located on the beach just off of Ocean Drive, a stone’s throw away from 10, 11 and 12 Street.
Almost everything is within walking distance, with the main Pride area featuring an array of food stalls, things to buy and various other activities that everyone can enjoy.
What are the best LGBTQ+ clubs and bars?
South Beach is the hub of Miami’s LGBTQ+ community, as well as its nightlife.
Twist is by far the city’s best nightclub and features not one, not two, but SEVEN different bars once you’re inside. With every room playing different music, as well as showstopping DJ sets and performances every night, it’s impossible to have a bad night.
When it comes to drag shows, Palace is the place to be and is known for hosting some of the world’s finest talent. As one of the oldest LGBTQ+ venues in the city, it’s a community staple and, given that it’s both a bar and restaurant, is the perfect way to watch a live show complete with amazing food, gorgeous weather and an unreal espresso martini, if you’re into that.
Is it easy to get around?
The short answer – yes! South Beach in particular is small enough to walk around and, given that you can usually rely on good weather, this is almost always an option.
You can also rent a bike via Citi Bike Miami, with access passes starting at $5.39 (£4.33) for 30 minutes. There are stations to do so all over the city and it’s a great option to get somewhere quickly and conveniently.
Miami also has low-cost public transportation which is effective, while riding apps such as Uber, Bolt and Lyft are reliable ways of getting where you need to go.
Where should I stay?
GAY TIMES had the pleasure of staying at the Cadillac Hotel and Beach Club during Miami Beach Pride 2023 and highly recommends it for anyone visiting the city.
Located on the beach, the Cadillac is in a prime location for those wishing to experience Miami at its best. The hotel is a mere 10 minute drive from the hustle and bustle of South Beach, but that short distance comes with the added perk of the area being a lot less crowded – resulting in quieter beaches, restaurants and bars.
There are two pools located in the hotel, one of which has the benefit of being limited to adults. The hotel’s Beach Club offers a variety of gorgeous meals which can be enjoyed under the comfort of shade as you sit outside by the ocean.
