We’ve been looking forward to this stage adaptation of Thelma & Louise for quite some time. It’s one of the most iconic films of all time, re-imagined for the stage with original screenwriter Callie Khouri writing the book, Grammy-nominated songwriter Neko Case penning the music and lyrics, and two of our favourite West End stars – Amy Lennox and Rachel Tucker – taking on the two titular roles. The show premiered this week at London’s Young Vic Theatre and it sounds like a real recipe for success… so how does it fare?

We’ll start by stating the obvious – our leading ladies are both fantastic performers, although if you’re a theatre fan you probably already know that. The story it tells, one of female friendship and empowerment, is excellent – but again, you may well know that too. Some of Callie Khouri’s lines are brilliant, but if you’re familiar with the film you’ll have already heard them. Still, we have an evening of powerhouse vocals, a compelling story and some classic lines, so there’s certainly plenty here to enjoy.

Unfortunately, this stage adaptation doesn’t really add much.
