A federal judge in Texas mentioned the late Dolly Parton while striking down legislation targeting drag shows.

Back in August 2023, the state's Republican governor, Greg Abbott, signed Senate Bill 12 into law, restricting "sexually oriented performances."

While the legislation did not explicitly cite drag shows, drag performers and their allies feared it had been passed with the intention of criminalizing the art form.

Unfortunately, they weren't far off. At the time, several Texas politicians said S.B. 12 would target drag shows. In a statement, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said the law would ban "sexualized performances and drag shows in the presence of a minor," per ABC News.
