In love with your straight friend? A therapist's guide on what to do
Ever fallen in love with someone you shouldn't have fallen in love with? A therapist weighs in on how to manage the grief, heartache and complex relationship dynamics of unrequited love.
She was my friend. And, I think, I loved her. We were teenagers then and before we knew it, about to go to university. I'd be heading South, she'd be heading East. So we made the most of that last summer.
We hung out almost every weekend, borrowing each other's clothes and going to our local dive bars. We'd swim in the lake and drive around, with no place to end up or time to arrive. I'd wake up and be excited to see a text come through asking what my shifts were that week to see if we could hang out. I knew she'd never had a boyfriend. Not really. Although I had had a couple. Sometimes we'd even kiss when we were drunk. Then one day, she met a boy. And my heart shattered.
