We’re losing track of the number of shows we’ve caught this season at Shakespeare’s Globe – the unusual quantity of warm, dry evenings we’ve had over the past few months has made outdoor theatre a much more viable activity for more the year than we’re used to. It’s also a pretty magical setting to catch a show, and we love that the Globe makes theatre truly affordable – there are rush tickets for most shows available from £5.

Last week we caught their latest offering, As You Like It, which is a Shakespeare play we’ve not seen before. So what’s it all about?

Well, if you’re familiar with Shakespeare’s comedies, there’s probably not much in here that will surprise you. They often feature a number of similar ideas – characters in disguise (often men dressed as women, or vice versa), leading to cases of mistaken identity; some family drama that needs to be resolved; usually there’s a happy-ever-after type ending, accompanied by a wedding or some sort of significant celebration. There will be music too, of course. As You Like It ticks all those boxes – for theatre enthusiasts it’s unlikely to offer much that they won’t have seen before – but it’s still terrific fun.
