As we noted in our previous roundup of gay romance novels ripe for adaptation, the world of film and TV still has a long way to go when it comes to meaningful LGBTQIA+ representation. That gap feels especially true for lesbian and queer women, with relatively few mainstream projects offering fully realised, layered sapphic love stories. While classics like The L Word, But I'm a Cheerleader and Carol have helped pave the way, there’s still plenty of room for the genre to grow.
The good news? The source material is already here. In recent years, queer book-to-screen adaptations, from Red, White & Royal Blue to Heated Rivalry and the upcoming Girls Like Girls, have proven there’s both an appetite and a market for these stories.
With that in mind, we’ve picked five sapphic novels that deserve the screen treatment next, along with our dream casting for the lead roles.
